The old man knew he had a terminal illness. His days were numbered.

He reasoned in his mind that he had a few choices.

  1. He could sit in his chair, read, paint , do a puzzle – yes he could…..and yes he did.
  2. He could remain comfortable and ensure that his life was peaceful and not complicated by stress. Yes, he could and he did.

But then he had an idea. He was going to welcome each new morning as a NEW beginning. He would write a simple sentence or maybe even record just a few words of his feelings, the weather, or a one word honest comment. BUT, he would also find a small object, painting symbol each day, He kept it all on a box marked ‘Papa Pete’s final journey.’ He knew the idea was inspired by God.

The legacy in this box is full of treasures. It covers only eighteen months but what wonderful beauty, faith, hope and appreciation for life. His personal writing under the lid made sense of the whole.

He had written…..I know that my God Lives and I know He is with me ALL THE WAY.

There are small pictures. Notes of honesty expressing pain and suffering. There are vibrant images of Hope and surity of eternity.

The beautiful stones, pressed flowers, shells, tiny pictures of his wife children and grandchildren have minute sticker images in some corners. A smiley, A star, or a ball, or drawn image of what he felt or knew about the person.

Pete’s Box is a great collection but the basic truth of this story is……..

He learned to welcome each day as A NEW BEGINNING.

I believe it is a good lesson for us all. HAVE A GREAT NEW DAY!

Blessings and love.

About Faye

I m a wife, mother and grandmother. I have always enjoyed writing even from an early age. My book Beyond the Ashes has been written as a labour of love. All the characters are real to me and their story needed to be told. As a Christian my desire is to write General Fiction stories about real people but Hope and a desire for 'better' will always be part of the journey. I have had several short stories published over the years and moderate success in writing competitions. I realized as I was thinking today (30/01/15) that perhaps I should add here that I have had life experiences of many valley times but also many mountain top experiences. I can understand and be beside anyone who finds their life in tatters because I have 'been' there. Of course as I have got older as well there have been the added sorrows of losing not only older family members but also one by one finding the dearest of friends and the ones of greatest support and care also dying. On the site of rich mountains has been my certainty of the value of marriage and how grateful I am that after loss and sadness I made a happy and long-lasting marriage commitment. The one who was my best friend back then is still my best friend 45 years later. Beyond the Ashes touches upon the POWER of LOVE when folk can forget about their own personal 'feelings' and reach out in LOVE to a desperate and broken person.

Faye, this is a beautiful post full of wisdom that could only come from the one who created the days/ At 73 my thoughts of leaving something behind has caused me to write a book, book of what life has dealt me and my husband and how a Holy God is not interested in perfect since he is the only perfect one. His perfect Son has taken us to many different place through our life and we have some scars to prove it but He always goes with us. both of us are grateful for the love.
We will be married 54 years in Oct, seems impossible because some of them were so hard and terrible due to our sinfulness. But God kept loving on us, teaching, loving, giving us wisdom and strength to go one more day and all of sudden we are at 54 years with grateful hearts. Lovely, powerful post
